Public exhibition to show draft proposals for Stanhope’s Elwick Place site

Emerging proposals for the comprehensive redevelopment of the Elwick Place site in Ashford town centre are due to go on show to the public for the first time.

Leading UK developer, Stanhope has announced that it will be displaying its initial proposals for the re-development of the derelict site at a public exhibition to be held in County Square Shopping Centre later this month.

Stanhope’s proposals, which represent in excess of £75 million of private investment into Ashford, include

  • A multi-screen Cinema
  • A family hotel to support Ashford’s growing tourist economy
  • Restaurant space to attract the country’s best-loved dining experiences
  • Homes, including private apartments, rental properties and retirement homes
  • Attractive public space and landscaping

Cllr Gerry Clarkson, Leader of Ashford Borough Council, said:

This is excellent news on a priority development site in Ashford and we are delighted to see these exciting proposals for the town centre come forward.

The council has been working hard with potential investors to get to this position and to achieve a high quality investment in the town centre.  A town centre cinema with places to eat and drink around a new square will be a real draw and will help to bring extra vitality to the town centre during the day and evening.  This key scheme is one of the council’s Big 8 projects, along with a new college, the potential expansion of the Designer Outlet and commercial offices proposed near the station.  All will play their part in the town’s future prosperity, therefore we very much welcome this proposal.

The council’s approved local plan for the area envisages a mixed use scheme that would complement the major investment that has already taken place in the County Square Shopping Centre and the Elwick Road shared space project, and once again this shows the growing confidence private sector developers have in Ashford.”

Gary Bourne, Director at Stanhope, said:

The upcoming public exhibition represents the culmination of many months of hard work with the team at Ashford Borough Council, who have been pivotal in helping bring forward this important site, about the best solution for Elwick Place in the context of the wider regeneration of Ashford. We’re eager to present our plans to the public and think people will be very excited when they see our vision.”

The proposals, which are designed by Guy Hollaway Architects, are due to be presented to the public for the first time at a public exhibition taking place over two days at Unit 16A, County Square Shopping Centre, Ashford, adjacent to the site:

  • Thursday 30 July: 10am – 3pm
  • Friday 31 July: 3pm – 8pm (attendees are advised to enter via the Tufton St entrance after 7pm)
